Chapter Twelve
Alistair stood in the middle of a dark room. Obs was at his side, as he had been since theyâd reunited. Neither the human nor drathe would permit themselves to be separated on this planet again, not for even a moment. They would rather die than let that happen. However, the nameless aliens didnât attempt to keep them from one another.
No, Alistair and Obs were left together and left alone. Alistair had spent his time concentrating on escape and speaking to Obs.
The drathe had spent his time sleeping and listening to his master. Whether the animal thought they had a chance to escape or not was anyoneâs guess, but as long as he was by Alistairâs side, he seemed to be at peace.
The stranger finally arrived, and given the darkness they lived in, Alistair couldnât say how much time had passed.
âSome of the others would like to speak with you,â he said from beneath his cowl. âThey arenât going to transform themselves into this shape as I have, and we all agree that our natural form is too much for you to handle, so there will be no lamp nor light for you.â
âI promise you, the current form you inhabit isnât all that comforting, but as you wish,â Alistair responded. âWhen do they want to see me?â
âNow. Youâre to follow me.â
Alistair supposed that when life was nearly over for them, there wasnât any time for waiting. He made no argument but stood from the cot. Obs followed, and the three left the room.
The darkness in the hallways and elevators was complete, but the stranger allowed Alistairâs mind to expand a bit farther. He was able to see the stranger, though not quite the same way the stranger had described seeing him. Alistair was able to follow, though, and Obs never once left his right leg.
The two of them stood in pitch-blackness now. The aliens had allowed Alistairâs mind to expand even more, letting him see almost the entire room he stood in, though stopping his abilities just before he saw them. Alistair couldnât imagine what they looked like, but they were certainly not so hideous or otherworldly as to drive him insane just from a glance. Yet, they kept themselves hidden.
Alistair said nothing. He remained in the middle of the room, eyes closed, trying to see as the stranger told him he could.
The first voice that spoke came from in front of and above Alistair. It wasnât the voice of the alien who usually interacted with Alistair, but someone new.
âDo you believe in the gods?â the voice asked. It was a whisper that seemed to snake around the outer edge of the room before finding Alistair.
âIâve never considered them,â he responded. âI suppose I do believe in them, though whatever they are, I donât believe they care much about us.â
Whisper-like chuckles came from wherever the creatures were. Alistair couldnât make out how many there were, not even with the different noises of laughter.
Eventually, their giggling died and another voice spoke.
